Magazine Project Genre Research - "Us Weekly"
For my fourth magazine I decided on Us Weekly, a magazine that typically deals with the same fare as People. This issue, however, deals with the top 500 movies of all time, and is part of the Us Weekly Specials series.
The front cover features movie posters from six famous movies: Dirty Dancing, The Godfather, Gone With the Wind, Bullitt, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, and Ben-Hur. It also features the title in large, bold, red font, the color most observable by the human eye from short distances, with a gigantic red bar underneath it. The subtitles are also in white, perfectly contrasting with the black background of the cover. The back cover features a full cover picture of Audrey Hepburn from My Fair Lady.
All of the articles are, unsurprisingly, related to movies. The very first section of the magazine discusses (in the writers' opinion) the top 25 movies of all time. The following sections deal with the top 25 movies of a certain genre of film, ranging from comedies to horror & mystery. There are no advertisements in this magazine, just cover to cover movie summaries/ recommendations.
Most of the photos are of the movies specified on the page, with movies introducing a section taking up at least 80% of the page and subsequent movies' photos taking up the amount of space that a sticky note would, though some are smaller (the smallest being approximately the size of a Kennedy silver dollar).
Us Weekly circulates 1,956,591 units annually, making it the 31st most circulated magazine in the United States. The magazine has received the following recognitions:
